Thank you Longmeadow

When we looked around the gymnasium during our votes last night it was IMG_20160511_110427 (1)surprising, gratifying, and inspiring to see the townspeople of Longmeadow hold up their yellow “VOTE NO” cards to crush the attack on our personal freedoms.

The right to firearms is guaranteed by our constitution, and that was shouted loud and clear.

Every attack on citizen rights was defeated in Longmeadow

At the Longmeadow town meeting residents overwhelmingly affirmed our 2nd amendment rights. Each and every one of the three warrants was defeated.

We cropped-liberty.jpgwill offer a summary once we gather our thoughts and notes.

Thanks you to the many people who volunteered so much of their time and treasure to see this through.  Our committee worked diligently to bring this to this end.

Thank you to our out of town friends who came and stood with us- Especially Dan Gannon who came down from Lowell and Jennifer from East Longmeadow.

Watch here for ongoing meeting updates.. Meeting goes live at 7PM

Don’t let our future be determined by your silence…

It was a beautiful yet chilly morning.  Our public awareness posts…  informed, 20160509_075023-2reminded and inspired … “What Time is the meeting?” was a common question from motorists as they passed our posts.  Early “honk polling”  shows strong belief in our constitutional rights. Negative responses were virtually non existent…  Except we had a repeat visit from our favorite expatriate…

Our “Angry British Guy” once again screamed at us… “You F***ing AMERICANS can shove your f***ing guns up your a**” delete angry-british-man

This was screamed at four of us standing there just smiling and waving…

This was shouted at Earl… a Vietnam era vet standing calmly on a roadside defending our 2nd amendment by the testimony of his feet and chill of the 35F morning.

This was screamed at my wife Kathy, a grandmother holding an American flag as she smiled at the passersby…

This is the vitriol… the utter contempt for any of us to DARE to defend rights that as Americans we hold.

We have been insulted for being “stealthy” and tricksters, by one of signers the petition for this onerous proposal. This man is a Poli-Sci professor from our town on his blog on WGBH.

We have been counseled to keep emotion out of our response… don’t name names… don’t make the other people at the town meeting feel nervous.

We will be calm. We will be respectful. We will be good citizens at the town meeting. We will exemplify the citizenship that was demonstrated by the founders of our town, by the founders or our nation.

But we will come out en masse and we will vote.

7pm TONIGHT – Come early-  Bring a neighbor

Tomorrow- we stand up for what is right…

We will be manning our sign posts on Longmeadow Street at the town lines both North and South.  We need supporters there both 6:15-8am and then 4:30 to 6pm.

We still have signs to get out and on lawns… Do you have a friend or family member in town who will let you put out a sign?

Get in touch to volunteer to stand or request signs…

Hyperbolic rhetoric and jingoistic displays of “patriotism”

Dear “Stealth team”-   (PS we have no stealth team…)delete spy-kids-gadgets

The following was published in a blog on the website of WGBH (Boston Area Public TV)-  Tale a look at how we are described.

PS- The NRA did not mobilize us, or support us… our group was founded by Walt Lamon who lives in Longmeadow. All of our committee members are from Longmeadow.

We have highlighted some of the sauciest parts…

NRA Sponsors “Stealth” mobilization in WMass

Jerold Duquette (PoliSci Prof at CSSU)

At next week’s spring Town Meeting in Longmeadow there will be three articles on the warrant seeking to regulate fire arms in this Western Mass suburb of Springfield. Articles 29, 30, and 31 were placed on the TM warrant by citizen petition, which means that they did not have to be approved by the Select Board. The articles call for a ban on fire arms on town property, a requirement that residents seeking gun permits identify and describe all their fire arms as part of the permitting process, and a town-wide ban on assault weapons and “high capacity feeding devices.”

The citizen petitioner is Longmeadow Selectman Alex Grant, who said he’s “looking forward to a nice debate on these issues” and that “[a]s long as we’re respectful, it’s going to be valuable for our democracy.” Local gun owners, however, appear to be anything but pleased about the opportunity for such a debate at the spring Town Meeting. Opponents of gun control in town wasted no time organizing and mobilizing against these measures. The N.R.A.’s “Institute for Legislative Action” targeted Longmeadow’s proposed gun control bylaws. Within weeks, signs started showing up on lawns in Longmeadow asking residents to “Vote No on Articles 20-30-31.” These signs include a link to a recently created web site, What they do not include is any mention of what articles 29, 30, and 31 are about.

With the help of the N.R.A., opponents of gun control in Longmeadow are engaged in “stealth” political mobilization operations.  Under the auspices of something called the “LongForLiberty Task Force” they have been conducting stand outs (which they call “awareness stations”) at prominent intersections in town where they hold their ambiguous “No” signs and wave to passersby at rush hour. However, they don’t hold any signs that identify their cause (i.e. preventing gun control bylaws from being enacted in Longmeadow). Clearly, they don’t actually want to make “the public” aware of their cause, rather they want to make the town’s gun owners aware without alerting “the public.” The idea is to mobilize opponents in town to attend the TM and vote down the proposed bylaws without alerting town residents who would be supportive of local gun control measures.

Longmeadow is an upper middle-class bedroom community that is hardly a hotbed for 2nd Amendment zealots. Were the issue properly and publicly joined by the town’s population, these proposed gun measures would pass easily. If the N.R.A. subsidized signage did include anything about “guns” or “gun control” it would likely have the opposite of its intended effect.

Though clearly a bit sneaky, this stealth mobilization is fairly smart.  There has been very little public attention to this issue and Town Meeting attendance is usually quite low.  Furthermore, the gun control articles are near the end of an unusually long warrant, which means that they may not be dealt with until late in the meeting. Longmeadow Town Meeting attendees are notoriously unwilling to remain at the TM late into the evening. Many residents leave right after the consideration of whatever item drew them to the TM.

So, on Tuesday night, May 10th in the Longmeadow High School gym a well-coordinated, though stealthy mobilization campaign will be up against what are probably majority sentiments in Longmeadow regarding gun control.  Fortunately for the N.R.A. backed local gun control opponents, well-organized and passionate minorities often prevail over less well-organized, less passionate majorities in American politics. Although, I suppose there might also be an even more stealthy mobilization operation underway among Longmeadow’s gun control supporters?

Frankly, I’ll be interested to see just how many of my buttoned-down professional neighbors are packing heat. I’ll also be interested to see how good the N.R.A’s political mobilization training really is. Will opponents of these measures on the Town Meeting floor make the popular but not very intelligent arguments against gun control often highlighted in our national debate about guns? Or, will local gun enthusiasts rise above brain dead, apocalyptic rhetoric and attempt to make rational, practical arguments against the proposed measures that might persuade their reasonable neighbors? Hard to say. The stealthy nature of their efforts so far counsel sophistication, though the name of their “task force” suggests that there may be some hyperbolic rhetoric and jingoistic displays of “patriotism” on the Town Meeting floor as well.

Red, White and Blue wrist bands are in!!!

5 days until our vote… How YOU can help

While manning my “awareness post” this morning a car slowed down and a man
yelled at me “F—ing Americans and your guns – they should take them all!”  That’s what we are up against friends. We have five days to convince Longmeadow Supporters to come out and stay for the vote.

We won’t convince that man, or many others- BUT WE NEED OUR SUPPORTERS TO COME OUT AND VOTE.

  • We will have some information sharing tables at local gun dealers on Saturday morning – and could use volunteers to be there to share the message.

  • We have our awareness roadside stations – and need your presence there…Rt. 5 at the town lines 6:00am to 8:00am and then 4:30pm to 6:00pm.

  • We will need people to hand out info sheets before the meeting- at the Longmeadow HS Monday May 10 at 6:15pm

  • We need all Longmeadow Supported to come and stay for the duration- it might me a long and arduous meeting- but we are begging you to STAY FOR THE VOTE.

  • Please talk to your neighbors, and friends- we have a lot of non gun owner supporters.

PS- Watch for us in the press we have two positive articles in this weeks Longmeadow News. Others??

Keep the faith! Spread the word!
